The birth of the DRC was supposed to herald a new dawn of self-determination. Instead, it ignited a series of tumultuous events that would shape its destiny. in 1997, and the country was renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo. But peace was fleeting. Kabila's government was plagued by internal dissent and regional tensions. By 1998, the Second Congo War erupted, often called "Africa's World War," involving multiple African nations, including Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Angola, and Namibia. This war saw the eastern provinces—particularly Kivu and Katanga—become battlegrounds for competing interests. The conflict was marked by atrocities, including mass killings, sexual violence, and child soldiers. --- ### The Kivu Conflicts: Murere, Jean Schrame, CNDP, and M23 The eastern Congo, especially North and South Kivu, became a perpetual zone of conflict. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been in civil wars since 20 March 1993. Prior that there were also many other wars that ravaged the young country. In Katanga, the Katangist, in Kivu, the Murerist , in Kivu the schrame, CNDP, M23 etc. Today the country is ravaged by war against the M23 backed by Rwanda and Uganda. People have been talking about DR Congo balkanisation just the way it occurred in Europe in the Balkans where by one country gave birth to 3 different countries. However DR Congo landscape is different from the Balkans.
